Senior Sewer Rebate Updates February 2022

Senior Sewer Rebate Updates February 2022

February 22nd, 2022 Status Update for Senior Sewer Rebate Program

• The Office of the City Clerk no longer functions as the intake office for receipt of eligible first-time applicants and renewals. Instead, the Department of Finance’s Utility Billing & Customer Service Division processes the applications, as noted below.
• The yearly renewal form requires the claimant to provide a copy of their government issued identification and a recent property tax bill for verification purposes.
• To simplify the application process, the Senior Rebate for multi-unit buildings and the Senior Exemption for single-family homes use the same application form and require the same documentation. The property type determines for which program the senior is eligible.
• Renewal letters have been mailed to those who received the rebate in 2020.

About the Sewer Rebate Program

Pursuant to Section 3-12-050 of the Municipal Code, people 65 years of age or older who own and occupy as their principal place of residence, a townhouse, condominium unit or cooperative apartment that shares a common water bill are eligible for a $50.00 annual refund. This is separate from the Senior Sewer Exemption for single family homeowners

Changes to Senior Sewer Rebate submission process as of January 2020: Submit directly to Department of Finance, DO NOT deliver to the Alderman’s office
As of January 2020, all Senior Sewer rebates will be handled by the Department of Finance, Utility Billing & Customer Service at 333 S. State Street. These rebates will NOT be handled by the City Council Committee on Finance and DO NOT need to be turned in to the Alderman’s office.
The Department of Finance is in the process of transitioning this program to the office of Utility Billing and Customer Service. They expect to send renewal notices to previous applicants of the Senior Sewer Rebate in mid March 2020. The new application will be posted to the City’s website.
Starting immediately, please submit all claim forms and supporting documentation to:
City of Chicago, Department of Finance
P.O. Box 6330
Chicago, Illinois 60680-6330
Or e-mail to: utilitybill@cityofchicago.org
This change is designed to streamline the application process so residents can receive their checks more quickly. If you have any questions, you may contact the Utility Billing & Customer Service office at 312.744.4426 or contact Alderman Cappleman’s office at 773-878-4646 or at ward46@cityofchicago.org.
