CPS Contingency Plan – Childcare Information in the Event of a Strike

CPS Contingency Plan – Childcare Information in the Event of a Strike

UPDATE: Students will return to class on Friday, November 1.

CPS and the Mayor’s Office have released a comprehensive contingency plan should Chicago Teachers Union employees go on strike starting October 17th, along with a letter from CPS CEO Janice Jackson for parents and families that can be found here.

Should a work stoppage occur, regular classroom instruction will not take place, but CPS school buildings will remain open to students with access to activities and breakfast/lunch.

Important Information
  • Charter and contract schools will operate on their normal schedules, and parents should check with their principal and school operator.
  • CPS buildings will remain open during their normal bell schedules. CPS administrative office staff will be assigned to schools as needed.
  • All before-school and after-school activities are cancelled. This includes — but is not limited to — sports, tutoring, field trips, Parent University activities, Local School Council meetings, and other community activities.
  • Students are encouraged to attend their regular school, but may attend any CPS location that is age-appropriate.
  • Chicago Public Libraries be open, along with a limited number of parks, Safe Haven sites, and other community partner sites.
  • Chicago Park District will also be open during their regular hours.
  • School transportation services will not be available.
  • CTA will provide free rides to students between 5:30AM and 8:30PM on weekdays. During this time, students do NOT need to tap their farecards on buses or at rail stations.

More information can be found on CPS’s website at cps.edu/contingencyplan.

Finding a Site

To learn of nearby sites for your student, please use the CPS Contingency Site Locator. The locator will show the closest CPS schools, parks, libraries, and other community sites that will welcome students. Information includes hours and whether or not food will be served. You can also find a full list of CPS school locations here.

All CPS buildings will remain open and will serve breakfast and lunch.

Please note: if you choose to send your child to a CPS school, REGISTER your child for the duration of the work stoppage. It will ensure that enough staff and meals are available each day. You will need your child’s Student ID number to do so.
