CTA Alert: Construction at Montrose, June 19 Updates

June 5-29 Construction at Montrose
CTA Red/Purple Line Track Interlocking

The CTA is getting closer to starting the construction of four new stations and tracks between Lawrence and Bryn Mawr, expected to begin by early 2021.

Ahead of that work, we need to build new track interlockings at Montrose and at Thorndale on the Red and Purple lines this summer that will allow us to provide Red and Purple Line service during new station and track construction (2021-2024) – and some of this work will have temporary impacts to CTA Red and Purple Line service in 2020. This work was originally planned to be performed over many weekends this year, but will instead be performed over two three-week periods to lessen the overall impacts of the work and to complete this initial trackwork before Labor Day.

Ways to stay connected with the CTA:

Friday, June 19 to Saturday, June 27
Noise
There will be continued street and track level noise (including during overnight hours) as this work progresses. Below are locations where there will be increased noise impacts and their approximate duration:

  • Near W. Buena Ave. – Saturday, June 20 to late Sunday night, June 21
  • Near W. Leland Ave. – Saturday, June 20 to late Sunday night, June 21
  • Near W. Montrose Ave. – Early Sunday morning, June 21 to Saturday, June 27

Overnight Work
Earlier schedule delays necessitate a condensed schedule with increased overnight work in order to resume normal service as quickly as possible.

Reroutes
Trains will continue to be rerouted to combine Red and Purple services onto two tracks to build the new interlocking. The interlocking is necessary to allow trains to safely switch tracks, which will allow CTA to continue to provide Red and Purple Line service during new Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr station and track construction (late 2020-2024).
